Explore the insects through the lens of botany as Andrew Gibson shows how intimately intertwined plants and insects are. Focusing on some of the world’s most intricate and beautiful plants,  orchids, Andrew will take us through the world of Ohio’s orchids and discuss their ecology, secrets, and relationships with their insect pollinators.

Most people think of the tropics or other exotic locations for orchids, but they occur literally just about everywhere on Earth. In Ohio, we have almost 50 native species in all shapes, colors, and sizes. Humans aren’t the only creatures to hold these fascinating plants in high esteem. Insects do too!

Andrew Lane Gibson is a native Ohioan and overall admirer of the natural world. He currently works as a field botanist and ecologist for the Ohio Division of Natural Areas and Preserves. Gibson is a graduate of Ohio University in plant biology and ecology, as well as Hocking College in wildlife management and biology. He’s also an ardent photographer and writer with a popular Instagram, The Buckeye Botanist, where he features his many botanical adventures and interests. You can often find him leading hikes or giving presentations to numerous naturalist organizations and groups throughout Ohio and the Midwest. Gibson’s hope is to be a catalyst for more people to appreciate and love our infinitely fascinating natural world.

Meet the curators of the Incredible Insects and the Cicada Room exhibitions. Take the opportunity to go behind the scenes of our latest exhibition. Meet the curators and artists to hear stories of the books and artwork. This is the Lloyd’s first in-person program in over a year and is in conjunction with Cincinnati’s Final Friday gallery walks. This ticketed event offers two time slots with reduced capacity. Masks are optional for those fully vaccinated, and recommended if unvaccinated.

5-6 p.m and 6-7 pm.

In the food garden, insects can be a plant’s best friend or worst enemy.  Domonique Peebles of Brick Gardens; Cedric Rose, gardener, writer, and librarian at the Mercantile Library; and Scott Beuerlein,  Manager of Botanical Garden Outreach at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden sit it down to discuss their strategies for attracting pollinators and protecting plants in their sustainable gardens.
