Wine and Cincinnati were once a perfect pairing. From the vineyards of Cincinnati’s first millionaire, Nicolas Longworth, to the sparkling Catawba Wine that inspired the “Queen City” nickname, Cincinnati’s grape cultivation and wine-making knowledge spread from Cincinnati to Lake Erie, New York’s Finger Lakes, Pennsylvania, Missouri, and California. Join local author and food historian Dann Woellert as he takes us on a journey through Cincinnati’s historic wine industry and chronicles the beginning of Cincinnati’s re-emergence of Cincinnati as a wine haven. Book signing of Woellert’s new book, Cincinnati Wine: An Effervescent History follows the lecture.

Sylvana Ross, AKA Syl Ross Nature Boss, received her B.S. in Biology from the University of Cincinnati in 2018 where she studied in a jumping spider lab looking at female mate choice in courtship displays. She now works as Queen City Pollinator Project’s Science Educator and beekeeper where she loves discovering the natural world and teaching her community!

Comments Off on The Gift of Wonder: A History of Nature Books for Children Opening Reception
It’s hard to imagine gifts more perfect than books and nature, especially during the holiday season. This year they come together through an exhibition at the Lloyd Library & Museum, The Gift of Wonder: A History of Nature Books for Children. The exhibit begins with an early children’s book, A Description of a Great Variety of Animals and Vegetables published in 1744 and continues through the 1970s with The Giant Golden Book of Biology, illustrated by Charley Harper.
Prepare to be delighted by book covers embossed with silver and gold, whimsical illustrations, and deep descriptive and scientific text. View the changing world of attitudes about children and nature through books from the Enlightenment to the twentieth century, highlighting the Victorian Era, also known as the Golden Age of Children’s Books. Children of all ages will find something fascinating and enchanting in the Gift of Wonder.
