Theodor Zwinger (1658-1724)
Theatrum botanicum; das ist. Volkommenes Kräuter-Buch...
Basel: In Berlegung Hans Jacob Bischoffs, 1744

Theodor Zwinger was a Swiss scholar - something of a univeralist, interested in many different topics. He was trained as a physician at the University of Padua, and returned to Basel where he joined the faculty there, lecturing on medical theory as well as Greek and ethics. Zwinger was known to be a supporter of Paracelsus. He is well known for his work on the art of travel, to which he gave the appearance of a science. The Lloyd holds his encyclopedic work on botany, which contains numerous hand-colored plates of plants.
