Though his education was in Philosophy, Julius von Sachs was a German botanist. He was a professor of botany at numerous German universities in the latter half of the 19th century. He made numerous contributions to the study of botany, but is best known for his work in plant physiology, especially as regards germination of plants. He taught many well-known scientists, including Francis Darwin, the son of Charles Darwin. Below is one of the many beautiful woodcuts from his Physiology of Plants, which contains some 455 woodcuts.
